Western Equivalent – piccolo
HISTORY:
The bangdi is mainly popular in the north part of China, used for accompaniment or solo in Chinese opera.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
The bangdi is made of bamboo, and is around 40 cm in length. Similar to the piccolo, it has a mouthpiece, 6 open finger holes, and several auxiliary finger holes. It is smaller than the qudi.
SOUND PROPERTIES:
The bangdi produces light and melodious sound similar to the qudi, only pitched higher. The sound can be strong and expressive for robust and lively emotions
