Definition
A term used in Medieval theory which covered a variety of specific meanings, but in each case it had the implication of a simple as opposed to a more complex item. "simplices conductus" implied a monophonic composition, "simplex organum" implied simple as opposed to composite organum, "simplex breve" implied that the breve should be of a regular, unlengthened duration, etc.
